Body Care Must-Haves

What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on it. Your skin is your largest organ and will absorb whatever it’s rubbed, smeared or dabbled in. The point is to keep things simple, using honest, straight-forward ingredients that don’t contain the parabens, chemical additives and other toxic ingredients characteristic of most products on the market. If you are used to wearing a lot of make-up or  hair product, try to cut back—you’ll look and feel so much more refreshed and your glow will reach new highs.

1. Body Wash

Find a high-quality vegetable-based bar of soap and it’ll last you months. You don’t need the frills and fancies of liquid soaps—just a decent bar of soap and exfoliating gloves (#2).

My favorite soap is the South of France brand. They are huge and last ages!

Ingredients: 100% Vegetable Oils: Palm Oil and/or Coconut Oil and/or Olive Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Shea Butter, Mineral Pigments or Colorants, Blends of Fragrance, Natural Oils and Essential Oils.

2. Exfoliating Gloves

Scrub dub you don’t stop. Get those nooks and crannies and you’re skin will be exfoliated and incredibly soft!

3. Body Lotion

I have been devoted to the derma-e brand for years. I find it highly effective and powerful despite being completely natural and upholding high health standards. A lot of organic, natural, vegan and raw body care products are good for your skin, sure, but are oftentimes ineffective and too light or inconsistently made. Some even go bad after a few weeks. Derma-e carries the bang, especially with its acne-fighting line. Currently, I’m using this body lotion. BUT, usually my go-to moisturizer is plain old coconut oil.

Embrace coconut oil! It is amazing for your body, face, hair, diet and plenty more. Make sure to get coconut oil versus its butter version. The butter uses the flesh of the coconut, whereas the oil is simply what is pressed out of the flesh. You don’t want to rub coconut flesh into your skin, so stick to the oil and use the butter for raw dessert recipes Smile.

Derma-e Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Allantoin, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Peg-100 Stearate, Stearic Acid, Organic Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Dimethicone, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Panthenol, Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Haematococcus Pluvialis (Astaxanthin, BioAstin®) Extract, Pinus Pinaster (Pycnogenol®) Bark Extract, Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Organic Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract*, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin

4. Face Cream

This is the most important part of your beauty ritual. A good face cream makes all the difference. I go through cycles with mine—every year it seems I have a new staple. First it was  Dr. Alkaitis’ Day Crème. Last year it was Simply Divine’s Skincredible. Then it was Tata Harper’s Rebuilding Moisturizer (which was way too expensive to justify for the long-run, considering how small the batches are! Sad smile ). Now I’m stuck on NeoBio’s Red Clover Tagescreme (Day Cream).

Simply Divine’s Skincredible revolutionized my skin. I felt the difference immediately, and the scent is absolutely wonderful—you don’t even need perfume when you use it. Tata Harper’s Rebuilding Moisturizer (and the rest of her facial care line for that matter) took my skin to a whole other level. Tata’s products are light and moisturizing and smell like fresh flowers. I recommend those two brands whole-heartedly. I found Dr. Alkaitis’ Day Crème to be not moisturizing enough and slightly sticky. It didn’t sink into my skin the way I wanted it to, although it is edible (I didn’t say appetizing). The NeoBio brand is my newest favorite. I love the red clover scent and the way it feels is perfect for the summer—light, nourishing, and not sticky or overbearing in the least. I swoon Smile.

5. Make Up

There are many eco-friendly make-up products out there, but I have to say that my favorite is Dr. Hauschka. I’ve been using the brand for a long time and have no reason to convert to another. I highly recommend it, since it’s not as weak and doesn’t easily wear away as other eco/health-friendly brands do. The eyeliner and mascara, especially, have been amazing replacements for my former chemical-ridden ones. Check out its other make-up products—they’re worth it!

6. Nails

Priti Polish, non-toxic nail polish – check it out!

7. Hair

The Morocco Method line is phenomenal! These products are catered to the specific nature of your hair and are tagged as the five elements depending on what they’re good for. There is a systematic way to use these products to reap the greatest results. They are healing and rejuvenating for your hair, so give ‘em a try!

8. Body Brush

Funny this is listed last, when it actually is the first thing you should do in the morning – dry brush! Dry brushing in circular clockwise motions from the tips of your toes and fingers and towards your heart, 5 days a week and naked, will increase circulation, reduce cellulite, stimulate the lymphatic system, and remove dead skin cells. It seems like a mindless, miniscule task, but it is actually one of the most effective practices you can do that will keep your body in shape, your skin soft, and your energy levels high. Give it a try and you won’t be disappointed. Here is a video “how-to”:

Enjoy these products and tips!

Simplify your beauty routine by sticking to chemical-free products. It’ll make your life so much easier as well as healthier and brighter! A true glow comes from true practices.

Body Care

I keep my daily beauty regimen simple and fuss-free. I strongly believe less is more! The less make-up, the more of a glow you can achieve. It takes time to get your skin where you want it, and everyone has different conditions to adapt to.  I have fine hair and dry skin, so I’m huge on conditioning every nook and cranny of my body.

My skin has also had its ups-and-downs over the years. I grew up with clear skin, but when I reached college and began drinking, eating unhealthily and getting little sleep, I went through periods where my skin was absolutely unbearable to manage.  The worst part about breaking out is that all you want to do is cover it up, but doing so just clogs your pores even more and continues the vicious cycle. I’ve sworn off cover-up and foundation, because if you just let your skin push all the junk out and maintain a hands-off approach, you’ll see that it eventually clears up on its own.  The key is to stop fussing! After trying to tame the beast that was my bout of acne, I decided to step back and stop applying so many lotions and acne remedies. I allowed it to get really bad before it got infinitely better. Be patient and trust your body’s inclination to balance.

Everyone, however, has to take into consideration their hormone balances, their predilection to acne, sensitivity to temperature and environmental toxins, and reaction to certain chemicals. Hopefully you have adapted to these over the years, and know what works and what doesn’t. There are, however, practices that I believe work across the board in improving/maintaining skin and hair appearance. Here are my bathroom cabinet staples:

1. Dry Brush

This bad boy is a simple, yet extremely effective way to activate your lymphatic system. Undress and set aside a few minutes every morning to dry brush (yes, that means no water). By brushing in an upward motion toward your heart in circular motions, you are stimulating your body’s circulation and encouraging detoxification. Focus on neck, behind the kness, armpits, and groin area for greatest results.  Also focus on your bootay to reduce cellulite. This ritual also warms you up on a cold Winter morning!

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is all-purpose. Don’t confuse it with coconut butter. Coconut oil presses and extracts the oil from coconut meat, whereas coconut butter includes the meat. Use coconut oil for your body. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of oil on your body–it won’t make you look greasy. It’s very light on your skin and absorbs quickly leaving no residue. It also leave a faint, fresh smell. No, you won’t smell like a pina colada. Coconut oil is great for scars, moisturizing, eczema and psoriasis, and I believe it to be the ideal conditioner for your skin and a great hair treatment. Don’t use it on your face if you are acne-prone. This is ALL you need in your cabinet for moisturizing! It lasts a long time too, so more bang for the buck!

3. Vegetable Soap

These soaps are vegetable-based and lack the parabens and other synthetic ingredients found in other soaps. They are cleansing and smell delicious!

4. Nails

Non-toxic brand of nail polish! My favorite brand–Priti. Click here to get some!

6. Skin-Care Line

This is a great line–Dr. Alkaitis makes organic, raw skin care products. They are light and make the skin feel smooth and luxurious.

7. Hair

Morocco Method International hair products. Great stuff. Great results. These products are 100% natural, raw, vegan, organic, fair trade, chemical-free, family and baby safe, and pet friendly. Oh, and they work like a charm! Can’t get much better than that.

8. Scent (Perfume)

Intelligent nutrients has made the most beautiful, feminine scent! I love Jasminas. Put a little of the oil behind your ears, on your neck and on your wrists, and you will exude a beautiful, natural scent that isn’t laced with chemicals and artificial additives. You will smell the glow!

9. Makeup

Alima Pure is a phenomenal line of makeup. This is what they have to say, “Our mineral cosmetics are never made with additives, fillers or fragrances that can irritate your skin or clog your pores. In fact, the pigments in our natural makeup are actually beneficial for your skin, offering sun protection and anti-inflammatory properties.” Sounds good so far. Even better, it is certified against the more rigorous European standards of the Federation of German Industries and Trading Firms for natural cosmetics. It is only the 2nd American cosmetics company to be able to boast this. The products are quality, pure, and eco-friendly. They are also affordable and you can recycle your jars!

Try these products for yourself. While some may be on the more expensive side, they are great investments that last longer than your average toiletries. They pay off in the long-run and are all you need!
